Valentine's Day
The series highlighted came as a result of previous experimentation with mask making and “acting out” my paintings. A mask can be both a void and a mirror to the viewer. The act of masking is also the act of revealing at the same time. Through the creation of these mask and the easing of lockdown at that time I started bringing them out into the world. There is a juxtaposition of the surreal along with reminders of the concrete. A red bikini grounding an image that could mean something else entirely had it not been there. An ability to see through the mesh of the mask and see the person partially underneath. I’m interested in how that tethers the image back to a specific place and time. This is not a prototypical and all encompassing female form but a very specific one.
